I tried Kate Middleton's diet on a budget, including a 'pond water' smoothie - Hull Live

Full of plenty of greens with a spicy curry, we tried to recreate the Duchesses diet for cheaper

The Duchess of Cambridge is known for her love of children and great sense of style, but recently it's her healthy diet that has got people talking.

After correspondents close to Duchess Kate spilled the beans on her normal day-to-day diet, we decided to find out how easy it would be to recreate what are said to be her favourite meals on a budget. And although isn't a vegetarian, we found her balanced diet leaned heavily towards plant-based options.

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a busy working Royal and mum, the Duchess is said to enjoy mostly homemade food, including a hearty porridge for breakfast or a wake-up superfood smoothie – a blend that includes plenty of greens.

The ingredients in the recipe read: kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, matcha, blueberries, spirulina, and coriander. My first thought was 'What is spirulina'? And with a quick Google search and plenty of reports saying it smells like "pond water", I was slightly concerned.

Lidl came to the rescue with most of the green goods and I thought sourcing the spirulina would be more of a task – but I was proved wrong. Down along the baking aisle in Tesco was a small pouch of the green powder, which is apparently packed with health benefits, both anti-aging and cardiovascular.

I whizzed up the smoothie, which was basically a sea of green with a hint of blue, thanks to the berries. It certainly looked healthy, but the smell was a slightly different story. The super-food blend smelt fresh, but the whiff of algae powder that floated through my kitchen definitely gave that "pond water" element. Taste-wise, it was certainly not as bad as some who have tried it had described, but if the Duchess stomachs that every day I'll give her a lot of credit.

For lunch, I made a colourful watermelon salad, with plenty of fruit and veg rich in antioxidants. Along with some juicy watermelon, the other ingredients include avocado, onions, cucumbers, and feta cheese. Again, it was simple to make and I was pleasantly surprised by how well the different textures blended together.

Finally, for dinner, the royal correspondent mentioned a handful of meals Kate is said to indulge in. Although her favourite meal is apparently a traditional roast, I couldn't justify making that for just one person. So the second best dish on the list was a curry.

Yes, you heard that right – Kate apparently is a big fan of spicy food, although she has previously claimed that her husband Prince William isn't so keen on it himself. Previously describing an Indian takeaway as her "guilty pleasure", in an interview with BBC Radio One, I decided to recreate a recipe labelled 'Kate Middleton Vegetarian Spicy Curry recipe'.

A spicy curry base is bolstered with chickpeas and spinach, instead of lamb or chicken. The perks of the dish were that it was easy, cheap, and quick to make, with most ingredients available from Lidl. Using a rice cooker made it an easy but healthy meal.

All-in-all, the Kate Middleton-style diet definitely feels like a health boost and, if the rumours are true and she does drink a superfood smoothie every morning, no wonder her skin is so bright and radiant. The watermelon salad had a summery vibe and seems perfect to serve in the sun.

Her day-to-day diet is easily replicated with ingredients easy to source from local supermarkets meaning it could be enjoyed by all - if you don't mind a bit of stinky algae.
